Community

For over 100 years, the JLWS has been a constant resource for improving the community we live in. It remains our goal to continue creating positive change for the betterment of the community by helping women develop civic leadership skills through the work they do, then put those talents to work in the community.

As a League, our current community focus is based upon the most pressing issues right now:

  • Nurturing and educating community members to build healthier families and stronger communities
  • Educating and Mentoring Youth from birth to age 18
  • Women’s Health Issues
  • Food Insecurity

Here’s how we’re taking action to address these issues:

We partner with a select number of local organizations by placing our trained volunteers with them to maximize their accomplishments. Our application process allows us to deliberately map the skills and availability of our volunteer work force with the needs of established organizations in the Winston-Salem community.

Our most recent community gift launched in 2023 in honor of the JLWS Centennial. The gift is an endowment of funds called the Literacy & Education Equity Funds Grants (LEEF). Its purpose is to financially support individual teachers and schools within the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System by awarding mini-grants for projects and programs that align with the JLWS’s community focus areas of children’s literacy, educating and mentoring youth, and improving family health outcomes.
